With the pandemic and consequent curfew in effect, the percentage of women with access to safe, sanitary products has suffered a great blow. In an effort to establish menstrual equity, GirlUp India and Project Baala have joined hands to implement Project Adhikaar- a pan-India fundraiser and awareness campaign.

As a part of the fundraiser, GirlUp Lucknow is conducting MERAKI, on 30 May and proceeds from this event will go towards donating sustainable pads to underprivileged girls and women in Lucknow. If you are looking to associate yourself with a philanthropic deed, then this is a cause you should take up!

GirlUp Lucknow is hosting MERAKI, an open mic event on 30 May, under the pan-India fundraising campaign of GirlUp India. The proceeds from this event shall further the cause of donating sustainable pads to underprivileged girls and women in Lucknow, once the pandemic situation improves.

The goal of this campaign is to empower menstruators with the right resources and knowledge, so that their periods don't add a period to their dreams, aspirations and lives. Mansha Mamgain, President of GirlUp Lucknow, has taken charge of this event powered by her belief that- "अधिकार in Hindi means 'RIGHTS' and we strongly believe that it is our basic human right to bleed with dignity and safety."

Menstrual rights are human rights

Under GirlUp India's Project Adhikaar, more than 150 adolescents will distribute sustainable menstrual pads in underserved communities across 10 Indian cities. This drive is being conducted to mark the World Menstrual Hygiene Day, observed annually on 28 May. To successfully donate as many menstrual hygiene kits as possible, GirlUp India- in collaboration with Project Baala, has started a virtual fundraiser on Milaap.

A United Nations Foundation initiative, this student-led community of GirlUp is working globally to advance the skills, rights and opportunities of girls to become leaders. Their programmes have impacted "85,500 girls through 4,500 clubs in nearly 126 countries" and continue to improve the lives of girls, everywhere!

According to NFHS-4, over 23 million girls in India drop out of school at the onset of menarche due to the inaccessibility of safe menstrual products. Further, only 36% of menstruating women have access to safe, sanitary products while others use ash, husks, old rags and other unhygienic methods. Usage of such unhygienic methods leads to serious psychological, biological, social and economic consequences. Associate yourself with Project Adhikaar because your assistance can help save a life!
