Since its much-anticipated reopening in June, following an extensive restoration, Lucknow’s iconic Rumi Darwaza has once again captured the attention of locals and tourists alike. Yet, as eager visitors flock to admire the monument, a new concern has emerged: the area around Rumi Darwaza is often cluttered with parked vehicles, from cars to tourist buses, disrupting the once-clear view of this architectural marvel.

The parked vehicles obstruct the visual experience that so many had anticipated, highlighting a need for better crowd and vehicle management to preserve the beauty of this celebrated landmark.

Heritage Zone Turns into Paid Parking

Despite being featured everywhere, from tourism ads to the UPMRC logo—Rumi Darwaza, is now facing the issue of unregulated parking.

In recent months, the area behind the Rumi Darwaza has become a makeshift parking space, where users are also being charged a parking fee. This activity persists despite a clear "No Parking" signage meant to preserve the area’s sanctity.

An influx of small food vendors, ice cream carts, and other thelas also surrounds the heritage site without regulation. This unmonitored setup too is clearly adding to the clutter, overshadowing the grandeur of the Rumi Darwaza.

Litter, Odour, and Animal Waste Tarnish Monument's Beauty

Littering, improperly parked vehicles near the heritage spot

The facade of Rumi Darwaza is frequently plagued by unpleasant odour from animal waste, left behind by camels and horses, used for rides. Additionally, improper sanitation practices, including public urination, are common around the monument.

Despite the presence of dustbins along the sidewalks, littering continues, creating an unsightly and unhygienic environment that detracts from the monument's beauty.

Urgent Need for Effective Parking Management

Speaking to Knocksense, Aftab Hussain, Superintending Officer of ASI (Lucknow Circle), remarked, "The presence of parked vehicles on both sides of Rumi Darwaza is deeply concerning, especially given the monument’s iconic status in the city. A heritage site and major tourist attraction like Rumi Darwaza should not be obstructed by converting it into a parking zone."

He further emphasized, "This situation calls for immediate action from the city's civic authorities. Strict parking restrictions must be enforced around the monument, along with the establishment of a proper parking area away from the structure."

As highlighted by Aftab Hussain, it’s crucial for local authorities to step up enforcement around Rumi Darwaza to address the ongoing parking issues. The Lucknow Municipal Corporation must also take charge of regulating the surrounding activities, including animal rides and food vendors, to reduce the clutter and protect the monument’s integrity.

Installing additional dustbins and introducing further cleanliness initiatives will be key in ensuring the site remains a proud symbol of the city’s heritage.
