The restoration of Lucknow's iconic Rumi Gate has been in progress for a while now. Initiated by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in December 2022, the project was initially slated for completion by June 2023. However, this deadline has been extended multiple times, and now the work will take a few more months for completion.

What's the reason for the delay?

Rumi Gate, an iconic monument in Lucknow, had been in need of restoration since long. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) began the restoration process in December 2022, revealing numerous cracks that had developed on the structure over the years. The unique components used in the making of Rumi Gate, which included pulses, jaggery, grains, eggs, and other materials, make this heritage structure unconventional, hence a challenge for ASI. The Conservation Ethics, had to be kept in mind too, due to which due to which the older deadline got stretched.

Aftab Hussain, Superintending Officer, ASI (Lucknow circle), informed Knocksense, "The front portion of Rumi Gate has been fully conserved, while progress on the back portion stands at 30%-40%. Despite the complexities, ASI aims to complete the restoration within 3-4 months, restoring Rumi Gate to its former grandeur."
