A total of 50 wetlands in Uttar Pradesh will be notified under the Wetland Rules of 2017. These wetlands stretch across nine Uttar Pradesh districts, covering a distance of 1,000 hectares. The said decision was taken at the fifth meeting of Uttar Pradesh State Wetland Authority, which was held on Wednesday.
Over two lakh metric tons of carbon will be absorbed by these newly notified wetlands. Furthermore, committees will be set up to raise awareness about conserving wetlands in UP across 58,000 gram-panchayats in UP. In addition to that, Wetland Day will also be organized at the grassroots level.
At the said meeting, the authority also gave nod to a new management plan for the upper Ganga River. This includes the first Ramsar site, spreading across an area of 26,950 hectares.
