World Sparrow Day: A group in Lucknow launches campaign for protection of the endangered birds

The week-long campaign, by a group of citizens in Lucknow, was flagged off on Thursday.

This World Sparrow Day, Lucknow will be participating in all vigour for a group of people have decided to launch a week-long campaign towards the preservation of sparrows.

The group, including eminent citizens and led by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Chiranjeev Nath Sinha, aims at creating awareness about the diminishing species.

The main objective of World Sparrow Day, which is observed annually on March 20, is spreading awareness around the protection of sparrows. The sparrow, currently, is on the Red List of International Union for Conservation of Nature's endangered species.

Saving sparrows from extinction

Even though most people grew up watching sparrows fleeting around buildings and houses, the birds becoming a big part of their childhood, the number of sparrows only kept deteriorating and are, today, on the verge of extinction.

ADCP Sinha expressed, "Sparrows have always been closest to humans but is considered the most domesticated bird. In recent years, the sparrow population has reduced drastically which is not a good sign. Through the campaign, we want to create awareness for sparrow conservation."

The said campaign was also flagged off by the Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Brajesh Pathak, on March 16.
