Adopting a more inclusive approach, Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal (MAT) has directed the state government to ensure that one seat for the post of the police sub-inspector be reserved for people from the transgender community. This step came to light after a transgender candidate, Vinayak Kashid, applied for the sub-inspector post amongst the recruitment of 800 police officers.
In 2014, the Supreme Court (SC) of India, passed a judgement wherein all TGs were awarded legal recognition as third gender and reservation in all public administrative services. Earlier in 2022, MAT directed the state government to design a ‘clear policy’ within 6 months to provide reservations to transgenders in the state public offices and educational institutions.
On November 7, Maharashtra government informed the MAT Bench that the reservation policy is still in it's formulation stage and would be available for review soon.
Apart from Maharashtra, Karnataka has rolled out a 1% reservation policy for transgenders across all the ranks in the state police department. Notably, the Chhattisgarh government has also recruited several transgender candidates as constables in the state police force.
