Mumbai experienced a drop in temperature on September 17 (Tuesday), recording a minimum night temperature of 22.6°C—lowest in eight years, according to India Meteorology Department’s (IMD) Santacruz observatory. The temperature was 2.2°C below the usual level.

On Wednesday, the night temperature nudged up to 24.4°C, still a tad on the cooler side at 0.4°C below normal. At the IMD’s coastal observatory in Colaba, things were warmer with a minimum of 25.4°C.

Weather experts explained that this dip in temperature was due to clear skies, which allowed the heat trapped in the earth’s atmosphere to escape swiftly.

Last year, Mumbai's lowest minimum temperature for September was 24°C on September 26. Weather officials were reported saying that it’s quite common for night temperatures to hover around normal or even dip slightly at this time of year.

Looking ahead, at IMD's five-day forecast: While there’s no mention of heavy downpours in the pipeline, light to moderate rainfall might still grace Mumbai.
