From the buzzing of rickshaws to faint sound of Bollywood songs always humming in the background, Mumbai is a city that never sleeps. And a place that perfectly brings together this inculcation of culture, diversity and good vibes is Mumbai‘s Prithvi Theatre.
A part of each Mumbaikar's life, this theatre is an inventive space for thespians from Mumbai and beyond. Now let’s take a closer at this place, where people often plod to enjoy the trills of cinema.
From the east to the west, crossing over mountains, lakes and metropolises, every community boasts of theatres for performing arts. Some are ultra-modern and while some are retro-themed remnants of the 90s, like our very own Prithvi Theatre.
Constructed in the memory of Shri Prithviraj Kapoor and inaugurated on 5 November 1978, this theatre aims at promoting a creative space for performing arts. "Udhwastha Dharmashala", written by G. P. Deshpande, staged by Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri and Benjamin Gilani, was Prithvi's first play.
With no main gate, Prithvi Theatre literally draws people of the path into the theatre compound with a welcoming attitude. Celebrating all things arts, there’s something new coming up here every night (except Mondays).
From workshops for kids and adults to live plays in Hindi, English, Urdu and Persian and select movie premiers, Prithvi Theatre has managed to create a significant place for stage artists. You can checkout their schedule here.
