Knocksense Shorts | BMC conducts successful trial run of lifeguard drones at Juhu Beach

Somya Agarwal

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) successfully conducted a trial run of remote-operated lifeguard drones, twice at Juhu Beach, on July 10. One was orchestrated during a low tide in the morning and the second, during high tidal conditions in the evening.

These life-saving drones can travel upto 2km into the sea at a speed of 7 knots (14 m/s), a feat no human can match. The drones can carry one person back to shore at a time, however, they can keep two-three people afloat until a lifeguard reaches them. Additionally, the drone is remotely operated by a skilled worker, who knows how to dodge waves. Since it depends upon free radio frequency, this device can be particularly helpful during cyclones or earthquakes.

Cost of one water drone: ₹6-₹6.5 lakh.
