Located in Pali Hill with its large green arched door, Torii, designed and partly owned by celebrity interior designer Gauri Khan, is bound to catch your eye! The restaurant's name translates to "a traditional Japanese gate, which symbolically marks the transition from the mundane to the sacred". And once you step into this progressive Asian restaurant, that's exactly what ensues!

In an exclusive conversation with Knocksense, restaurateur Mr. Abhayraj Kohli and Chef Stefan Gadit, delved into the behind-the-scenes of Torii. They shared their visions behind Torii, a sneak peek into the upcoming menu and more!

The visionary behind Torii: Abhayraj Kohli

With a rich background in hospitality, Abhayraj Kohli is armed with a Master’s in Hospitality from Cornell University. His impressive portfolio of F&B concepts includes Indyaki, Please Don’t Tell, The Roll Company, Grandmama’s Café, MRP Lounge, House of Lloyd’s, and now, the latest, Torii. Kohli's family has also played a pivotal role in the culinary journey of Dadar's iconic 82-year-old Pritam da Dhaba.

In a conversation with Knocksense, the force behind Torii, Mr. Abhayraj Kohli shared, “We’ve strategically positioned Torii at Pali Hill, as it is one of Mumbai’s most affluent neighbourhoods. There's truly no other place like Bandra-Khar for such a venture, as the crowd here has a discerning palate designed for luxury. This is where the buzz is; all the top brands are here! Everybody wants to be in this locale!"

Mr Kohli further added, "When it comes to eating out, it is not only about food- it is also about a visual experience and of course the ambience. So last year, we partnered with Gauri and revamped the restaurant into what it is today! At Torii, we aim to offer a contemporary dining experience, that is like no other."

Torii: Gauri Khan's debut in the world of hospitality

Celebrity Interior Designer, Gauri Khan, has previously designed restaurants like Arth and Sanchos. However, Torii marks her personal foray into the realm of hospitality.

Behind Torii's Menu: Chef Stefan Gadit

In a conversation with Knocksense, Chef Stefan Gadit, the creative force behind Torii's menu, shared, “Whenever I think of Torii, the top three words that come to my mind are Abhay, Gauri and Sushi. We've designed a menu that is fresh and distinct, in line with our personal tastes. Here, the purpose is to savour the food; not simply eat and go home."

Further, Chef Gadit excitedly revealed, "We have a new upcoming menu, which is a fusion of international influences and flavours. Diners can expect a blend of Mediterranean and Japanese cuisines because I'm always eager to showcase my cooking style. For me, it is about presenting dishes that are not only exquisite but beautiful too. Also, my current favourite tequila-based cocktail with grapefruit is a part of the new menu launching this November.”
