From a sleepy Koli fishing hamlet to being the Financial Capital of India, Mumbai has come a long way. After a series of reclamations and massive construction efforts, Mumbai became what is it today— a mega metropolis.
So, one such place that has seen the city go from 'Bombay' to Mumbai, is Khar Gymkhana. A pre-independence hangout spot, this space effervescently captures the historic essence of Mumbai.
In 1928, a few Khar-Bandra residents created a small association to offer recreational facilities to the community. In one such meeting of the association, the casting vote of the Chairman favoured the formation of Khar Gymkhana.
Initially, the Gymkhana came into existence as a hangout spot in Khar for middle-income groups, in 1935. And now, transforming into an iconic Mumbai landmark from a small room in a bungalow on 14th Road, Khar Gymkhana has come a long way.
The owner of the bungalow was gracious enough to allow members to gather and play carrom/cards and make future plans as well. Things took a turn when a Cricket Club, known as Khar Young Cricketers led by the Late Mr. Vithaldas Divecha, decided to merge with Khar Gymkhana. There begun a new legacy.
Back then, the area beyond CKP Hall to the south of Linking Road were full of paddy fields. Thanks to the efforts of Late Mr. B.G.Kher (1st Prime Minister of the Bombay State, 1940) the Government sanctioned a piece of land in Khar West to Khar Gymkhana. This is where the present building stands.
Eventually, the numbers of the list of members grew and it included some of the most prominent industrialists of Mumbai as well as members of princely families. The donation amount then was ₹500 only and now, people often say that it’s pretty tough to secure a membership of the club.
Khar Gymkhana aims to bring together people who cherish socialising, under one roof. It gives them a platform to share ideas, discuss events and organise social programmes to encourage Mumbaikers to actively participate in a sense of community.
At Khar Gymkhana, members can avail of several amenities at the activity room, book meetings at the conference room and conduct events at the Presidential Hall. For cricket, tennis, pickleball, billiards, and swimming, Khar Gymkhana has designated spaces and also a library for bibliophiles. Check out their official website here.
