BMC revokes 10% water cut in Mumbai and MMR

The lakes providing water to the city now have sufficient water storage after two days of heavy rain

Drishti Mathur

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had announced a 10% water cut in Mumbai due to insufficient water storage after the delayed monsoon on June 27th. However, after only two days of heavy rainfall, the water storage in the lakes that supply the water in different parts of the city has risen to normal.

In light of this, the BMC has decided to revoke the water cut orders. The lakes received around 27 mm and 235 mm of rain 24 hours, bringing its water stock to 2.76 lakh million litres as of July 7th.

Less rain resulted in a scarcity of drinking water storage

Modak Sagar, Tansa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Tulsi, and Vehar are the seven lakes that provide water to Mumbai and Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). According to BMC statistics, the present water stock in these lakes was 80,648 ML (million liters) less than in June 2021, and the remaining water storage would only be enough for forty days.

However, within only two days of constant heavy rain, the water stock in the lakes has increased to the point where the water cut in Mumbai and MMR can be revoked. Despite ample water supply, the BMC continues to warn Mumbai and MMR residents to use water cautiously.
