Daily Mumbai COVID cases rise by 83% on Tuesday, the highest since January 29

Fresh coronavirus cases exceeded the 1000-mark for the first time in 5 months

Mumbai on Tuesday reported 1,242 new COVID-19 cases, marking a sizable 83% spike from Monday's tally of 676 cases. This is also the first time in 5 months that the single-day load of fresh coronavirus cases in the city have clocked beyond the 1000-mark. As per reports, Mumbai last reported about 1,411 cases on January 29 during the third-wave.

The Mumbai case rise 

Mumbai's COVID tally recorded a surge of about 566 additional cases over Monday's tally, pushing the active cases to 5,974. As per the BMC health bulletin, the total infection count, on the other hand, now stands at 1,07,776. The civic data further highlights that, except for the dip on Monday, Mumbai is witnessing a steady rise in the number of new COVID-19 cases. The city had logged around 961 new cases on Sunday and 889 on Saturday.

The statistics further reveal that the total number of cases reported in the first week of June in Mumbai are almost 100% over the number of 1519 cases registered in March, about 60% over the 1,795 cases in April and about 50% over May's tally of 5,838.

Meanwhile, no COVID-19 related deaths were reported in Mumbai in the past 24 hours, limiting the toll to 19,569. On the other hand, reocveries were up at 506, pushing the overall count to 10,46,233.

Maharashtra sees an 81% COVID surge on Tuesday

At the state level, the overall COVID-19 surge rose by an alarming 81% on Tuesday, with Mahrashtra's daily fresh case tally at 1,881. This is significantly higher than the 1,036 cases reported a day earlier. Interestingly, the fresh case count is the sharpest single-day spike in Maharashtra since February 19, when the state logged 1,635 new cases.

Of the load, a single case of B.A.5 variant of the virus has also been detected too. As per the genomic reports, this case was detected at B J Medical College, Pune in a 31-year-old local woman. The patient was asymptomatic and recovered in home isolation.
