Located in one of Bandra's charming lanes, stands a quiet sentinel of history and faith- St. Stephen's Church. Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbour, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount (Mount Mary Church), this Anglican place of worship holds a unique place in Bandra's rich tapestry of religious architecture.

St Stephen’s Church, a Gothic revival masterpiece

Founded in 1845, St Stephen's Church is a testament to the changing tides of colonial India. As British East India Company solidified its presence in Bombay, the need for a protestant church in Bandra became apparent. English settlers, seeking spiritual solace far from home, raised ₹8000 rupees to construct this sanctuary on a hill near Mount Mary Church.

The church's architecture is a charming example of the Gothic revival style, popular in Britain that time. Despite its modest size, St. Stephen's boasts several striking features. Tall lancet windows, with stained glass allow the Arabian Sea breeze to waft through the nave, creating a serene atmosphere for worship.

The altar, facing east, is adorned with three magnificent stained glass panels installed after 1885. These depict pivotal New Testament scenes- the stoning of Stephen, Christ's Ascension and Paul Damascus Road encounter.

St. Stephen’s unique Anglican heritage

St. Stephen's has weathered many changes over its 170 year history. Initially a chapel, it grew into a full-fledged church. In 1953, its centenary year, the congregation welcomed modern amenities like electric lights and fans. Today the church stands as part of the Church of North India (CNI), continuing its mission of outreach and social programs based on Christ's teaching

A visit to St. Stephen's offers more than just architectural appreciation. The small cemetery and garden on the west side provide a peaceful spot for reflection. The church's unique position as one of the few, if not the only, Anglican churches in predominantly Catholic Bandra makes it a fascinating stop for those interested in the area's diverse religious landscape.

Bandra’s peaceful refuge with a storied past

Often overlooked by visitors on their way to Mount Mary’s, St. Stephen’s Church offers a tranquil escape for those who take the time to discover its subtle charm. Whether you’re intrigued by its storied past or captivated by its serene ambiance, St. Stephen’s is a treasure that invites reflection. It stands as a testament to Bandra's layered history and the steadfast faith of its community, welcoming all to pause and appreciate its quiet beauty.
