Ultimate, also known as Ultimate frisbee, is a non-contact team sport played with a flying disc. The sport is slowly gaining momentum in Mumbai, thanks to the School of Ultimate. It is a game played on a pitch divided into three zones, where the goal is to pass the frisbee to a teammate in the end zone you are attacking.
Confused? Don’t worry, just catch Samarth Shetty, the Co-founder of SoU, leading his next Ultimate session at Juhu Beach, and he’ll explain it all.
In an exclusive conversation with Knocksense, Samarth Shetty, who has been into sports for over 15 years, explained, “Ultimate Frisbee is a non-contact team sport played with mixed-gender teams. The game is self-refereed, offering fantastic opportunities for young people to develop communication skills.” He has played for India in tournaments around the world such as – AOUGC 2015 in Hong Kong, WUGC 2016 in London, and WUBC 2017 in France.
It was in May 2023, when Samarth Shetty and Shruti Chopra finally came together to offer their experience to sports enthusiasts with the foundation of School of Ultimate. They are also backed by a team of trained advisors and coaches to make learning fun and fruitful!
While Shruti is the backbone of SoU’s online presence, Samarth excels as a commendable coach on the field. Both share a deep passion for sports and plan to take the School of Ultimate to new heights in Mumbai.
“I might not be an Ultimate Frisbee player myself, but I absolutely love watching and attending matches,” shared Shruti with a grin. “What I really admire about Ultimate is its self-officiating concept. There's something quite charming about seeing players hash out their own instructions and then crack on with the game.”
Further, Shruti shared an inspirational tale with Knocksense.
“It’s the story of a young girl from Mumbai who often found it difficult to play and was usually left sitting on the bench while the boys played. But her luck took a turn for the better at the School of Ultimate! Welcomed with open arms, she jumped in with both feet. As it’s a mixed-gender sport, she could finally roll up her sleeves and show what she’s made of. Watching her light up the field was truly a joyous moment for us."
The School hosts classes twice a week at Juhu Beach for both children and adults (7 years and above). First-timers can also avail a trial class for a one-time fee (paid in advance). To find out more, follow the School of Ultimate on Instagram.
