IIT Bombay's new hyperlocal weather system now live on Mumbai Flood App; know details

Khushboo Ali

A team form the Indian Institute of technology Bombay has launched a hyperlocal weather forecasting system for Mumbai, offering precise predictions for specific neighbourhoods, streets and areas. This innovative project, in collaboration with MGCM Centre for Municipal Capacity and Building Research (MCMCR), is now available to the public through the Mumbai Flood App on Android devices.

Real-time rainfall and flood alerts

The system enhances existing weather data from the Indian Meteorology Department’s (IMD) main observatories in Colaba, Santacruz, and Marine Lines, as well as over 60 automatic weather stations across Mumbai and its suburbs. It provides hourly rainfall predictions for the next 24 hours and daily forecasts for the following three days.

Developed by a team of ten students, faculty, and staff from IIT-B's Climate Studies and Civil Engineering departments, this project aims to assist both citizens and authorities in managing Mumbai's notorious monsoon challenges. The app also offers flood alerts using water level measurements from sensors at critical locations like the Mithi River and Vakola Nala.

The web portal, accessible via the Mumbai Flood Monitoring Portal, and the Android app aim to assist citizens and authorities in managing Mumbai’s monsoon challenges. Funded by HDFC ERGO through the HE-IITB Innovation Centre, the project is supervised by Prof. Raghu Murtugudde and Prof. Subimal Ghosh from IIT Bombay.
