The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, officially named Atal Setu and recognized as India’s longest sea bridge connecting Mumbai to Navi Mumbai, has achieved a remarkable milestone since its inauguration in January 2024. As reported by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), over 50 lakh vehicles have crossed this vital link in the last 7 months.

Between January 13 and August 25, a total of 50,04,350 vehicles, including BEST, NMMT, and MSRTC’s Shivneri buses, have used the bridge, averaging around 22,000 vehicles daily.

According to a MMRDA spokesperson, the bridge has seen the passage of 47.40 lakh cars, 50,020 minibuses and light motor vehicles, 59,799 double-axle vehicles, 73,074 three-axle vehicles, 80,277 four to six-axle vehicles, and 503 oversized vehicles.

Stretching 21.8 kilometres, the Atal Setu stands as India's longest sea bridge and the 12th largest globally. Constructed at a cost exceeding ₹17,840 crore, this engineering marvel has significantly enhanced connectivity between South Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

Ongoing infrastructure projects, such as the 75% completed Worli-Sewri elevated road, will soon provide a swift 5-10 minute link to the Atal Setu. Additionally, an elevated road between the Chirle Interchange and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway is being developed to further accelerate travel across the region.

This milestone not only highlights the bridge’s pivotal role in revolutionising regional transportation but also underscores its potential to stimulate economic growth.
