The Indian Naval Ship INS Tarkash ferried two tankers of liquid medical oxygen from Qatar to Mumbai on Monday. Propelled by the Indian Navy's Mission Samudra II, the consignment delivered about 40 metric tonnes of medical-grade oxygen in Mumbai to meet the increased demand for COVID supplies here. As per reports, around 760 oxygen cylinders and 10 oxygen concentrators also arrived at the city docks from Bahrain on May 24.
The Ministry of External Affairs lauded the Indian Navy's efforts to bolster oxygen availability in India as its INS Tarkash parked 2 cryogenic tankers, with 20 MT of LMO each, at Mumbai. The ministry also expressed gratitude to the international allies, Bahrain and Qatar, who have come forward to aid India's battle against the second swell of coronavirus infection.
Earlier in May, INS Tarkash was employed to ship a similar consignment from Qatar to Mumbai under the French Mission 'Oxygen Solidarity Bridge'. About 20 MT of LMO and 230 oxygen cylinders were provided to the Maximum City then, to resolve the ongoing shortage.
As India continues to battles the perils of the COVID pandemic from the frontlines, the Indian Navy has stepped up to ship medical supplies from global allies. All operations to further this are being heralded under the Mission Samurdra Setu II, which is bridging the gaps in the health and clinical support infrastructure. Other naval vessels such as INS Kochi, INS Tabar and INS Airvrat are also engaged to augment the availability of oxygen resource in the country.
