Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is the governing, civic body of Mumbai. It has been entrusted with the maintenance of numerous skywalks and foot-over bridges (FOBs) in Mumbai.

In an announcement, the civic body declared that all BMC managed skywalks and foot-over bridges in Mumbai, will have escalators. Senior citizens often hesitate to use skywalks because of the numerous stairs. Upcoming FOBs that will have escalators are ones at Charni Road railway station and Hindmata in Dadar.

As far as the existing pedways are concerned, an escalator will be installed, depending upon public demand and the staircase structure. Officials stated that for an escalator to be fitted onto a skywalk, it is essential that the staircase is straight and not curved. As of now, only one skyway at Jogeshwari is equipped with an escalator facility. Soon the FOB near Mahim creek will have an escalator facility.
