In the pipeline for while now, the Maharashtra Legislative Council has finally passed a resolution on July 9 to rename 7 Mumbai Local Train Stations. Spearheaded by State Parliamentary Affairs Minister, this initiative aims to give new names to stations, currently in English.
Now, the new names will be submitted to the Union Government for final approval. This decision reflects a broader debate on shedding colonial legacies associated with station names.
Mumbai's Local Train Stations that are set to embrace new identities:
Charni Road to Girgaon
Cotton Green to Kalachowki
Currey Road to Lalbaug
Dockyard Road to Mazgaon
King's Circle to Tirthankara Parswanath
Marine Lines to Mumbadevi
Sandhurst Road to Dongri
Interestingly, Mumbai Central's proposed renaming to 'Nana Jagannath Shankarsheth Railway Station' has been omitted from the latest list.
Notably, Mumbai has witnessed such changes before as well pertaining to iconic stations like Victoria Terminus (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) and Elphinstone Road (now Prabhadevi), marking a continued effort to reclaim historical landmarks.
