The 22-kilometres long, much-awaited Mumbai Trans Harbour Link Project is inching closer to its completion. Once ready, the MTHL by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority will become the largest bridge in India. Let us take a look at how this ambitious sea link will ease the everyday commute for Mumbaikars and affect the Mumbai to Pune & Goa travel time!

Enhancing connectivity between Mumbai & Navi Mumbai

With interchanges at Sewri, Shivaji Nagar and Chirle, this 3+3 lane project starts from Sewri in Mumbai and lands at Nhava Sheva in Navi Mumbai. Reportedly, 15.5 km of this 22-km MTHL project, will run over the sea connecting Sewri with Nhava Sheva across the Mumbai Harbour. Offering better connectivity between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, the sea link will add ease of travel for everyday commuters.

Apart from improving connectivity, this sea link will also cut short the travel time between these two points by minimising traffic congestion on the route. To tackle the problem of vehicular congestion at the end of this sea link, a 6-kilometre long MTHL extension will also come up at Nhava Sheva.

MTHL to reduce travel time from Mumbai to Pune & Goa

While this bridge is mainly being built to ease the traffic congestion in the island city, people travelling from Mumbai to Pune & Goa will also reap its benefits.

At present, the travel time between Mumbai to Goa is somewhere around 11 hours by using the current route (P D’Mello Road, Freeway, Sion-Panvel Expressway, Mumbai-Pune Expressway and on to the NH 48). Upon completion, this sea bridge will reduce this travel time to around 9 hours.

Similarly, the travel time between Mumbai to Pune will also be slashed by half with the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link. It takes almost 3 hours to reach Pune from Mumbai, currently, but with this sea link, the travel time will be cut down to 1.3 hours only.
