The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor project has seen ongoing progress, with both governmental authorities and private entities achieving significant milestones. The recent construction of a 350-meter-long horseshoe tunnel near Zaroli Village in Gujarat, is one of the notable achievement, in this regard. As part of the project's future plans, the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) intends to construct six similar tunnels along the route.
The construction of the initial tunnel is considered remarkable, given the complexity of the task done, after drilling a mountain. There was further a requirement for unique alignment to accommodate high-speed trains travelling up to 350 kmph. This was done using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). Further, it might be a considerable challenge to replicate this construction method to construct the six additional planned tunnels, which will be identical in design and purpose.
