Mumbai reported as many as 1,956 fresh COVID-19 cases on Friday, the sharpest single-day spike in 5 months. The city last reported a tally as high as this on January 23 earlier this year during the third wave of the pandemic. A record also suggested that Mumbai has logged over double the number of cases in the first 10 days of June than the whole of May, raising the concerns of a fourth wave.

The rising infection trends in Mumbai

Between June 1 and June 10, a total of 11,397 new COVID cases were reported in Mumbai, resulting in over 90% hike when compared to the total cases load of 5,979 in May. The death count too has surged to 4 in June so far, as opposed to a total of 3 fatalities in May. While the toll remained unchanged at 19,570, due to zero casualties in the last 24 hours, active cases did rise, from 7,898 a day earlier to 9,191 on Friday.

In addition to this, Mumbai's test positivity rate also exceeded the 10% mark after a sustained period of control. On Friday, Mumbai's positivity rate was at 12.74%, up from 9.64% on Thursday. According to the BMC health bulletin, Mumbai's total COVID-19 case count now stands at 10,77,199.

For the respite: high recovery, low hospitalisation

Recovery too shot up by 763 in the last 24 hours, taking the cumulative number to 10,48,438. As far as the hospitalisation is concerned, only 369 beds of the total 24,943 are presently occupied in the city. Of the new load of 1,956 new cases on Friday, a total of 1,873 were asymptomatic. The remaining 83 symptomatic patients have been admitted in hospitals, where only three cases require oxygen support.
