Mumbai in Minutes | Know all about MMRDA’s new 90-km Ring Road Project

Khushboo Ali

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has launched an ambitious plan to encircle Mumbai with a network of ring roads, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion and improve travel times. With an investment of ₹58,000 crore, the project will span over 90 kilometres and is expected to be completed within five years.

MMRDA Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee emphasised the vision of "Mumbai in Minutes", which is about "targeting travel times of under an hour across the city. Most of the new roads will be tolled, helping to manage the existing infrastructure more effectively."

A comprehensive Ring Road Plan for Mumbai

This extensive network includes both inner and outer ring roads, providing seamless connectivity to suburban areas and easy access to the Gujarat border, Konkan Maharashtra, and Western Maharashtra.

Key components of this massive infrastructure push include the Versova-Bandra Sea Link, Alibaug-Virar Multi-Modal Corridor, and the Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway. These projects, along with others, will form a complete ring around the city, traversing through sea, creek, forests, and urban areas using innovative engineering solutions.

The network is also strategically designed to manage increased traffic expected from future developments like the Navi Mumbai International Airport and Wadhwan Port.

This comprehensive plan, part of a larger ₹3 lakh crore infrastructure initiative, is supported by international agencies and is expected to significantly boost the region's economic growth, potentially doubling its contribution to India's GDP by 2030.
