Mumbai Metro & BEST to extend Election Day travel hours; know key highlights

Transport services will run from 4 AM on November 20 until 1 AM the next day.

To support the upcoming Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha General Election on November 20, 2024, Mumbai Metro One has announced extended operating hours. Metro services will begin at 4 AM on polling day, with the first trains departing from both Versova and Ghatkopar stations. The service will run until 1:00 AM the next day, providing a 21-hour window to help election officials, staff, and commuters.

These extended hours are part of a larger transportation plan that also includes BEST buses and suburban railways, ensuring seamless mobility for both election staff and voters.

BMC’s directive ensures smooth polling operations

This decision follows a directive from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Commissioner and Chief Electoral Officer in response to requests from Returning Officers. The extended operating hours will particularly benefit polling station officers and staff, who need to reach their designated locations early and stay late into the night, according to a Mumbai Metro One official.

This service extension is crucial, as the metro provides vital connectivity between the Western and Central Railways. Additionally, low-floor AC buses will be available for senior citizens and people with disabilities.

The Election Commission has also declared a mandatory public holiday on polling day to allow citizens to vote. Employers must grant full-day leave to employees, with a minimum of four hours off in exceptional cases. Strict action will be taken against organisations that fail to comply with these directives.

The vote counting is scheduled for November 23, 2024, marking an important phase in Maharashtra's democratic process.
