Mumbai on Yellow Alert as monsoon lashes city; "very heavy" rainfall forecast for today

Somya Agarwal

Mumbai monsoons have finally regained speed, promising heavy rainfall in the days ahead. IMD has further issued a series of alerts urging caution, in response to the current weather patterns. For Mumbai and Thane, a Yellow Alert has been issued signalling heavy rainfall for Monday, while Orange Alert for districts like Ratnagiri, Raigad, and Sindhudurg. Temperatures across Maharashtra are varying widely, ranging from a high of 34.9°C in Nandurbar to a cooler 19.1°C in Mahabaleshwar.

Since Sunday evening, Mumbai has already witnessed a dramatic show of rainfall, with the IMD cautioning that this is just the beginning. This weather phenomenon aligns with IMD's broader forecast of “very heavy” rainfall across Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra in the upcoming five days. Meteorologists point towards strengthening westerly winds and the formation of a trough along the west coast, as reasons behind this weather condition.

Meanwhile, residents are advised to stay tuned to weather updates from IMD and local authorities. Precautionary measures include avoiding travel during heavy rainfall, especially through flood-prone areas like underpasses and low-lying streets.
