Mumbai's August rainfall dips 30% below average; no alerts, light showers expected today

Somya Agarwal

Mumbai's August saw a 30% rain shortfall from the norm. While the city usually enjoys an average of 566 mm of rainfall in August, Mumbai recorded only 379 mm last month, making it the third-lowest August rainfall in six years. This comes on the heels of last year's similarly meagre 177.2 mm. For comparison, August 2022 had quite a downpour of 551 mm, and 2020 was soaked with 1,240 mm rains.

With the dry spell showing no signs of relief, IMD is promising light to moderate showers, with a splash of thunderstorms, for Mumbai and Thane from Monday to Thursday. However, no alerts are in place for both

After a rain-soaked July where Mumbai enjoyed a 50% surplus, the city has already exceeded its seasonal average quota of rainfall on August 24. So, while August was a bit of a letdown, Mumbai’s monsoon game is still strong.
