Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Tuesday launched a pilot programme that uses Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) & Solar Photovoltaic Hybrid (Solar Mill). With this, Mumbai International Airport becomes the first airport in the country to do so. The programme is aimed at exploring the possibility of harnessing Wind and Solar Energy together. Managed by an Adani Group Subsidiary, the airport aims to reduce its dependency on conventional electricity.
CSMIS in collaboration with WindStream Energy Technology India Pvt. Ltd. has developed a novel and patented program to ensure 24/7 energy generation enabling low carbon emission through sustainable development.
The Mumbai International Airport Ltd. (MIAL) has deployed a 10Kwp (Kilo Watts Peak) Hybrid Solar Mill consisting of 2 Kwp turbo Mill (3 Savonious type VAWT) and 8 Kwp Solar PV Modules with an estimated minimum energy generation of 36 kwh/day.
As per the reports, the energy generated through this technology can be customized on a need-specific basis. Additionally, its modular and scalable size eases the work to mount the technology on any mobile or static rooftop. This technology is a vital step in deploying a sustainable solution, ensuring the use of clean and green energy and environment-friendly technique. According to the officials from MIAL, the technology holds a 25 years design life.
The Plant requires bare minimum maintenance when compared to other methods of energy generation. In FY 2021-22 CSMIA used 9.41 ml units of renewable power which consisted of onsite 5.46 ml units solar power and 3.94 ml units of wind energy.
On the trail of global coal crises this is another initiative by CSIMA towards sustainable development. Mumbai Airport has already achieved ACA Level 3+ Neutrality in 2016-17. It further keeps up with the global crises and adopts timely sustainable practices toward greener India.
