Somya Agarwal

People, it’s finally happening! The Phase 1 of Mumbai’s ambitious underground project—Mumbai Metro Line 3—is set to make its debut by September-end. Also known as the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ or Aqua Line, it is divided into two phases: Phase 1 from Aarey Colony to BKC and Phase 2 from BKC to Cuffe Parade. Phase 1 will cover 9.63 km of the total 33.5 km-long stretch.

Connecting you to hotspots like Nariman Point, Fort, and SEEPZ, MML-3 is expected to transform Mumbai’s transportation network.

Key updates from Mumbai Metro Line-3

MMRCL is working on the multi-modal integration of stations for MML-3, which will involve connectivity with other modes of public transport for the last mile. It includes well-maintained footpaths outside the stations, seating arrangements, and footbridges wherever needed.

The integrated trial runs of underground Metro Line-3 Phase 1 was started on March 12. Before certification can be granted, a comprehensive safety review will be conducted. This will involve assessments of all commuter-related features, including lifts, escalators, and staircases. The review certificated will be issued by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO), Independent Safety Assessor (ISA), and Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS).

According to the GoI approval dated February 29, 2024, the revised project cost of Mumbai Metro Line-3 is ₹37,276 crore, with 57.09% of the funding coming from a JICA loan amounting to ₹21,280 crore.
