In a major infrastructure push, plans have been unveiled to extend Mumbai’s Coastal Road from Nariman Point to Virar in Palghar. This ambitious expansion, supported by a substantial ₹54,000 crore investment from the Japan Government, is set to slash travel time between these locations to just 30-45 minutes.

The project represents a transformative advancement in connectivity for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), marking a major step forward in regional development.

Mumbai’s Coastal Road Extension: Know Key Highlights

This announcement comes as the Coastal Road Project makes substantial headway, with phase one—from Marine Lines to Kandivali—rapidly advancing. The first 10.58-km segment, running from Marine Drive to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL), opened in March 2024, achieving a 70% reduction in travel time and a 34% decrease in fuel consumption.

A recent milestone was achieved with the successful installation of a 44-meter span that links the northbound road to the Worli Sea Link, marking significant progress in this transformative infrastructure effort.

The project also boasts ambitious features, including a parking facility for 1,857 vehicles and four underground parking areas in strategic locations around Worli and Breach Candy. Upon completion, a scenic 20-meter-wide promenade will extend along the coast, complete with biking paths, an open-air theatre, and various recreational amenities.

Extending the Coastal Road to Virar is anticipated to enhance regional infrastructure and stimulate economic growth, reshaping travel and leisure along Mumbai’s western coastline.
