Exciting developments are underway in Malvan, Maharashtra, as the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW) is advancing its SagarMala programme. Currently, the construction of a new terminal building and jetty promises a significant boost to Maharashtra tourism. With approximately 7 lakh annual visitors flocking to the iconic Sindhudurg Fort, the upgraded jetty will ensure safer and more efficient travel experiences for tourists.

Unlocking India's coastal potential with Sagarmala Programme

Launched by the Government of India in 2015, the SagarMala programme aims to unlock the vast economic potential of India's 7500 km coastline, by enhancing port infrastructure and facilitating swift, cost-effective cargo transport. Maharashtra's limited major ports, like Mumbai and Jawahar Lal Nehru Port, have long faced cargo evacuation challenges, but this project seeks to alleviate those constraints, ensuring smoother transportation of goods and enhancing tourism infrastructure.

About Sindhudurg Fort

The Sindhudurg Fort, located off the coast of Maharashtra, was constructed by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1664 to resist foreign invaders and the Siddis of Janjira. Positioned on Kurte Island near Malvan town, it represents the strength of the Maratha military. Situated 450 kilometers south of Mumbai, this fortress remains a vital component of India's military history and is recognised as a pivotal element of the Maratha Military Landscapes of India.
