Season's first rain and massive dust storm in Mumbai; IMD issues Orange Alert for several areas

Khushboo Ali

Mumbai, Thane, and adjoining areas experienced a welcome respite from scorching temperatures on Monday afternoon as a massive dust storm and rain swept through the region. The day witnessed cloudy skies, as forecasted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), with rainfall and thunder showers expected to persist till night. The mercury hovered around 30°C, down from a peak of 33°C, providing relief from recent heatwaves.

Rain anticipated in different areas

The day began with a minimum temperature of 27°C, projected to peak at 33°C, with winds from the northwesterly direction expected at 11.1 km/h. Severe dust storms accompanied by rain engulfed the city, throwing normal life out of gear. Landing and takeoff operations at Mumbai airport were temporarily suspended but resumed at 5:03 PM after witnessing 15 flight diversions during the storm.

Rain is expected to lash Mumbai and its surrounding regions today and tomorrow, providing much-needed relief after weeks of searing temperatures. The sudden drop in temperatures follows a progression of heatwaves in April, with May expected to be relatively cooler this year. Similar weather conditions are reported in different regions of Maharashtra, with an orange alert issued by the IMD for several areas.

Regarding air quality, the Air Quality Index (AQI) for PM10 particles in Mumbai stands at 76, falling within the 'Satisfactory' class, according to SAFAR-India. Moderate caution is advised for AQI levels between 100 and 200.
