If you are seeking adventure this weekend, look no further than Purandar Fort. Perched at 4,472 feet above sea level, this fort is just 40 km from Pune. Situated on a giant block, it rises majestically against the backdrop of towering mountain peaks and a clear blue sky.
The oldest known reference to the fort is from the 11th century Yadava dynasty. As you explore, you'll discover the rich history etched into the very walls of this ancient fort. Recaptured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1649, Purandar Fort has witnessed countless battles, including a siege by Aurangzeb's forces. During the Peshwa era, it served as a stronghold whenever Pune faced attacks.
In 1818, British forces took control of the fort. During World War II, Dr. H. Goetz, a German prisoner, studied the site and wrote a monograph on it. After Independence, Purandar also hosted a National Cadet Corps (N.C.C.) training unit at its summit.
How to reach: One way to reach Purandar Fort is by flight. The nearest airport is Pune International Airport. From there, you can rent a car. Alternatively, you can drive directly from Mumbai, which takes around 4 hours.
