The south-bound arm of Mumbai's eagerly awaited Coastal Road, stretching from Worli to Marine Drive, is set to be inaugurated on March 11. Originally slated for opening on February 19, the delayed inauguration has now been confirmed by BMC Commissioner I S Chahal. The 10.5-kilometer stretch, including the much-anticipated undersea tunnel, will be accessible to motorists from 8 AM to 8 PM.

Paving the way for transformation

Originally projected for November 2023, the significant Coastal Road project encountered setbacks due to alterations in design, prompted by objections from Worli fisherfolk. This caused the final phase, now aiming for completion in May 2025, to undergo construction delays. Nonetheless, officials affirm that more than 75% of the endeavour is already accomplished.

The completion of the twin tunnels, spanning 2 kilometers, marks a significant milestone in this ₹12,721-crore initiative, which commenced in November 2018. Despite the deadline extension due to design adjustments, progress continues steadily towards realising this ambitious infrastructure development.

The project's grand vision includes a sprawling 320-acre Central Park along the coast, amalgamating existing open spaces. The opened section boasts a 10.5-kilometer stretch, with entry points at Worli Seaface, Haji Ali, and Amarson's interchange, exiting at Marine Lines.

As Mumbai eagerly anticipates the opening, motorists are reminded to adhere to speed restrictions due to ongoing construction. The Coastal Road promises convenience and a transformative addition to Mumbai's urban landscape.
