Good news for commuters around Jacob Circle station in Mumbai. Mumbai Monorail, under Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), will commission an airport-inspired, moving walkway or 'travelator' from Jacob Circle Station to Mahalaxmi Railway Station and the upcoming metro station on Line 3. The estimated cost of the project is around ₹62 crores.

According to officials, a tender for the project will be floated soon.

Connecting Jacob Circle to Mahalaxmi

Jacob Circle, commonly known as Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk caters to a large number of passengers in South Mumbai’s Mahalaxmi and Byculla. The travelator will connect Jacob Circle Station with Mahalaxmi railway station. Notably, MMRDA plans to extend the walkway up to the upcoming Line 3 of the metro station, with a proposed length of 415 meters. The walkway will have two passages, three-meter wide tracks each, to help passengers move in both directions. Reportedly, the travelator will be introduced to the public by August, 2023.

Ease of movement for elderlies and handicapped

Jacob Circle is a monorail station that caters to a large passenger footfall daily. Coming to the rescue in rush hours, the proposed travelator will enable swift movement and provide ease of movement to elderlies and handicaps, along with passengers with knee problems.

MMRDA is also constructing an underground metro linking Mahalaxmi station to handle more passengers.
