"Violent thunderstorm" in Mumbai catches citizens off-guard; Yellow Alert issued for today

Somya Agarwal

On October 10 evening, Mumbai was lashed with heavy rainfall, "most violent thunderstorms ever" (as locals termed it) and lighting, throwing normal life out of gear.

The sudden downpour caught many off guard, especially since the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had only issued a Yellow Alert earlier, predicting light to moderate rainfall.

Today, the Yellow Alert is still in effect, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, along with light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds reaching 30-40 km/h in isolated areas. According to the latest IMD update, Central Maharashtra, can expect heavy rain to persist over the next few days, with warnings extending until October 14.

Many users on X shared visuals of the loud bangs of thunderstorms and flashes of lightning amid the heavy rainfall.

Stormy Consequences:

  • As a repercussion of yesterday’s downpour, local trains on the Central line are running behind schedule, lagging by 15 to 20 minutes today.

  • Moreover, water-logging is reported in several areas of Mumbai and also neighbouring Thane and Palghar districts.
