Belonging to a farmer's family from Rajasthan's Rajsamand region, Bhawna Jat has finally realised her dream of representing India at an international event. She has qualified to be part of India's contingent and participate in the 20km race walk event, that shall be held at the Tokyo Olympics. Fighting regressive mindsets, prejudices and financial constraints, Bhawna Jat is a national record holder and aims at winning medals for her nation at future events that she participates in.
Jat made it as an Olympic participant within 9 years, since she began her journey
Bhawna Jat's journey began in the hamlet of Kabra, Rajasthan, where she championed against all odds to reach where she is today. She made headlines in February 2020 for setting the then national record at the National Open Race Walking Championships, held in Ranchi. She qualified for Tokyo Olympics by completing the event in 1 hour 29 minutes and 34 seconds, which is well within the qualifying mark of 1 hour 31 minutes.
Her dedication surpassed the mental anguish she faced due to the fellow villagers remarking on her practice hours and clothes. Support from her family, especially her athlete brother- Prakash Jat, has resulted in the remarkable achievements that dot her career timeline so far. An extremely focused sportsperson, she made it as an Olympic participant within 9 years since she began her journey.

Bhawna Jat had to leave college due to financial issues, however, a reward for her accomplishments came in the form of employment by the Railways. Further, the recognition that her latest achievement has brought, has helped in changing the mindset of the people of her village. Now, she is being approached by many who hope to encourage their daughters to make a career in race walking.
