Rajasthan gets its 4th tiger reserve & becomes the 9th state to host over 100 tigers

Rajasthan becomes the ninth state in India to host a population of more than 100 tigers and this feat has been achieved after tigress, T-111, in Ranthambore gave birth to 4 cubs. Post this event, the tally of the number of tigers in the state has reached 102. Further, Rajasthan's fourth tiger reserve is all set to be established in Bundi's Ramgarh. This initiative aimed at restoring the tiger population in India has been received well by wildlife enthusiasts across the nation.

Tiger population increased by 33 in 3 years

The approval for setting up the fourth tiger reserve in Ramgarh has been recently granted by National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). Currently, preparations to ensure safe translocation of the tigers to this new place in Rajasthan, are underway. The other three tiger reserves of Rajasthan are located in Sariska, Ranthambore and Mukundra, among which Ranthambore is host to the highest population of tigers with 69 of them, including 18 cubs.

Further, NTCA stated in a meeting that more tigers will be relocated to Mukundra, however, the shifting situation shall be assessed prior to making any final decisions. It is noteworthy to mention that in the past 3 years, the number of tigers in Rajasthan has increased by 33 and this count is expected to increase, once the Ramgarh Tiger Reserve starts functioning.

State-wise tally of tiger population

The number of tigers in Rajasthan is 102 while the highest tally is registered in Madhya Pradesh at 526, which is closely followed by Karnataka with 524 tigers. Uttarakhand is noted at number three with 400 tigers and Maharashtra is at number four with around 300 tigers. Other states ranking higher than Rajasthan are- Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Uttar Pradesh.
