With a mission to establish a network of wheelchair services in India that complies with the standards set by the WHO, this project is expected to help the differently-abled people in Jaipur and inspire other cities and states across the country. Like most developing countries, in India wheelchairs are allotted to the masses in bulks, irrespective of the varied needs of the individuals. This makes it difficult for differently-abled people to use the wheelchair thereby enabling lower mobility.

According to the census of 2011, Urban Jaipur alone has over 6900 mobility-disabled people out of which at least 20% require a wheelchair. Without the right wheelchair, these people face immense trouble in movement thereby creating hindrance in their everyday work.

With this newly-launched clinic for wheelchairs, people with mobility issues will be able to customise wheelchairs as per their requirements. As per the officials, in the next three years, this government-operated hospital aims to help 600 people including children and adults by providing them with the right wheelchair.

What are wheelchair clinics?

An appropriate wheelchair that is well-designed and fitted, not only enhances mobility but also opens up a world of education, work and social life for those who need such support. Wheelchair clinics offer much-needed services for people who require custom fitting for specialty wheelchairs. Providing a comprehensive evaluation, these clinics assess the need for custom seating, positioning, and mobility as per the requirement of the patient.

With this first clinic set up in Jaipur, the project JCF-Viraj is likely to offer a long-term mobility solution in the city. As per reports, this novel initiative is expected to spread across other cities in Rajasthan as well leading to the creation of a sustainable system.
