Folklore tales associate Chand Baori with Raja Chandra, a local ruler. Having no epigraphic evidence, it is one of the few historical places in the country which lack a precise dating of their origin. Famous as one of the largest step-wells in the world, the site houses 3500 narrow steps aligned in perfect symmetry which descend to a depth of 20 metres. The steps form an enchanting puzzle and the recurrent dance of light and shadow on the structure gives it a mesmerizing look. While the central well is surrounded by stairs on three sides, the fourth presents a multi-floored pavilion adorned artistically with ornamented jharokhas, pillared galleries and balconies displaying beautiful sculptures.
Adjacent to the Baori is the magnificent Harshat Mata Temple. The temple is known for its splendid architecture and its courtyard offers a spectacular scene with sprawling village fields, tapered streets, small huts and houses while the sunlight makes a bewitching maze of brightened spots and dark shadowy patches.
