In around a month and a half, Kanpur Metro will celebrate its third birthday. The first section of Kanpur Metro was launched on December 28, back in 2021. Aimed at providing 'world-class transportation' to Kanpurites, the project is an ambitious one with future expansions planned to cover the entire city. However, only the 9 km stretch from IIT Kanpur to Motijheel has become operational in these three years. Additionally, next month, a new stretch featuring 5 underground stations is also expected to become operational.

Today is World Public Transport Day. On this apt occasion, let's hear what Kanpurites have to say about their city's metro journey, thus far.

Empty except on Sundays; People eagerly await expansion

Abhi toh I don't think it has made much difference. But December mein jab new stations inaugurate ho jaen to shayad fark pade.

Prachi Gupta, 21

One thing's for sure. Construction work for the upcoming corridors is creating a lot of congestion and inconvenience. Too many diversions and alternate routes.

Shubham Ojha, 25

Much needed upgrade for our city. Thoda time lagega but I'm sure we'll see crowded metro trains in Kanpur, too.

Priyam Singh, 33

As much as I've seen, our metro mostly stays empty, except on Sundays. I think kuch saal aur lagenge before the majority starts using it.

Fayyaz, 27

Normal public se zyada toh influencers dikh jaate hain video banate hue.

Sanjay Singh, 37

I use it to commute every day. Very little crowd for now but I think it's peaceful. Good for somebody like me.

Ankit Bawa, 24

Underground stations will be inaugurated, soon. We might also have Corridor-2 ready next year. I believe these upgrades will transform how our city commutes.

Manak Gupta, 28

So, Readers! Drop your thoughts...

Much like the above-mentioned quotes from folks in Kanpur, the response Kanpur Metro has gotten thus far is a mixed bag. With only a 9 km stretch currently operational, it is safe to say that there's a lot to come.

So, how do you rate the metro as a public transport option in Kanpur? And what suggestions do you have to make it more popular among commuters? Tell us in the comments.
