Kanpur metro corridor to soon become reality; receives a significant budget allocation
Being one of the major industrial hubs of the state, Kanpur has remained a significant centre for the manufacturing of leather, textiles, automobile parts and defence equipment. As a result of the rapid pace of urbanization and industrialization, severe problems like traffic congestion, inadequate public transport and improper infrastructure of road networks in the city have cropped up.
Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation's (UPMRC) Kanpur Metro project is here to change that. While the contruction work is on in full swing, the recent allocation of the extensive budget will now give a boost to the whole project.
Ambitious plans for metro line expansion in Kanpur
The UP government recently rolled out the state budget for the financial year 2023-24. Under this, the government has earmarked a sum of ₹585 crores which will be utilized for the overall development of the mass rapid transit system in Kanpur.
Notably, the 9 km long high-priority stretch of the Orange line corridor was completed back in December 2021 and the metro train is already plying on the route. The section consists of 9 elevated stations between IIT Kanpur and Moti Jheel.
Presently, UPMRC is working on the expansion of the Orange line corridor (23.4 km) and on the development of the new 8.6 km long Blue Line corridor between Barra-CSA University.
What is the current progress?
The proposed route for the expansion of Orange line corridor will consist of a 4-km long stretch and will also consist of 4 underground stations i.e. Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha and Nayanganj.
The tunnel boring machines 'Nana' and 'Tatya' were deployed back in July 2022 and have now completed the work of tunnel construction on the downline and upline between Bada Chauraha to Nayaganj.
This Monday, the launching shaft has been brought down for the construction of the Chunniganj underground metro station. Excavation work will be started soon after setting TBM.
Following this, the Nana TBM will start the construction work of 1264 meter long tunnel between Chunniganj and Bada Chauraha, in the first week of March.
As per the detailed project report (DPR) released by UPMRC, the overall metro project of the city is estimated to be finalized by the end of the year 2024.
