Kanpur's forgotten yet historic Shukla Talab Baradari to be transformed into a heritage resort
Uttar Pradesh Tourism has initiated an ambitious project to restore and repurpose several heritage properties across the state into luxury heritage hotels. As part of this endeavour, the historic Shukla Talab Baradari in Akbarpur, Kanpur Dehat, has been earmarked for transformation into a premier hospitality estate.
To bring this vision to life, the state tourism authority has signed a concession agreement with Neemrana Hotels Private Limited, Rajasthan, and Redwood Holding & Realty Service Private Limited. This initiative follows a public-private partnership (PPP) model, ensuring that neglected heritage sites are restored and repurposed for tourism and hospitality.
In addition to the Shukla Talab Baradari, the state government has identified Jhansi’s Barua Sagar Fort for development into a heritage property.
Mughal-Era Site to Get a New Life
The plan to convert Shukla Talab Baradari into a heritage resort has surfaced multiple times in the past. However, this time, UP Tourism is moving forward to finalize the project alongside other heritage destinations. Tourism Director Prakhar Mishra, stated that these projects will be executed under the adaptive reuse model through a public-private partnership. This will further enable tourists to experience local art, cuisine, culture and ODOP initiatives.
The Shukla Talab Baradari, located in Akbarpur of Kanpur Dehat district, is approximately 50 kilometres from Kanpur city. Built during the Mughal era, it holds historical significance, particularly from the 1857 uprising. The site, which features a baradari alongside the historic Shukla Talab pond, has been long neglected despite its rich heritage. However, with this new initiative, efforts will be made to restore and transform it into a heritage resort, providing visitors with an immersive cultural experience while also supporting conservation efforts.
