With repair work currently underway on the Gandhi Setu in Lucknow, public movement has been stopped here completely. As per officials of the Public Works Department, vehicular movements from Gomti Nagar to Lohia Path and the 1090 Power Line intersection will remain shut till May 30th. Notably, the administration has diverted the traffic plying on this route to Samta Mulak Chauraha instead.

Traffic diverted to Samta Mulak Chauraha

Since the bridge is just 7 meters wide, it wasn't feasible to carry out the repair work along with traffic movement on this bridge. This led to the stoppage of vehicular movement on this route.

As per the traffic diversion issued by officials, people moving towards Vipul Khand, Dayal Chauraha and Husadiya intersection via Ambedkar Park will now have to take the Samta Mulak Chauraha route instead.

Over 50,000 vehicles ply on this bridge everyday

Considered to be one of the main entries of the Gomti Nagar area, the Gandhi Setu witnesses the movements of more than 50,000 vehicles on an everyday basis. This includes the general public movement and the VVIP movement.

Manish Verma, executive engineer of the provincial division of PWD revealed that the expansion joints on Gandhi Setu have become defective. With tears caused due to heavy traffic and time-worn cracks, the road had become very dangerous leading to several accidents on this stretch. Taking note of this situation, the PWD officials have now taken up the repair work of this prominent Gandhi Setu.
