Teachers of all UP government colleges will be given training in spoken English from now on, in a bid to enhance the English education in the state.

The online course has been developed by Prayagraj's English Language Teaching Institute (ELTI), which is a unit of UP State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT).

As per the Uttar Pradesh Secondary Education department, the course is said to improve the environment of spoken English, the course will proffer practising of both listening and speaking skills.

To benefit all

The aforementioned course, that has 132 modules of 10 minutes each, is interactive in nature with an assessment test at the end of each module. It is expected to benefit some 30,000 teachers and all the students who are enrolled in Uttar Pradesh secondary schools in classes 9-12.

"This course is different from the existing courses in the private sector in providing knowledge of essential grammar, syntax, common errors and conversation-practices and also following the general Indian English based on the British pronunciation," ELTI principal Skand Shukla explained.

It is important to make teachers proficient in the language, opined Deputy Director Vikas Srivastava. "The spoken English course will be beneficial to teachers from across the streams — science, commerce and humanities." he added.

District inspectors have been advised to ensure that all English teachers take the training.
