Authorities at King George's Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow are preparing to launch a new programme for providing home care to terminally ill patients in the area. Under the upcoming initiative, a team of palliative care experts will be formed.

This team will incorporate paramedical and nursing students/staff who will visit the homes of terminally ill patients. They will educate family members about how to provide care and handle emergency situations, including end-of-life care.

What are palliative care units?

The programme will focus on providing compassionate care and support to patients with life-limiting illnesses, as well as their families. The teams will work to render comfort, symptom relief and emotional support to patients and their relatives during the difficult time.

Once established, these teams will maintain contact with the families of terminally ill patients and provide telephonic guidance in case of emergencies. They will also make periodic home visits and ensure that the patient is receiving adequate care.
