Knocksense Shorts | UP's first skin bank to come up at KGMU in Lucknow
Uttar Pradesh's first skin bank is likely to be established at Lucknow's King George Medical University (KGMU) within the next 3-4 months. The 1500 sq. ft. facility will include all the necessary equipments including a walk-in fridge, surgical tools and instruments, a shaking incubator, a bio-safety cabinet and a vehicle for transporting the donated skin.
Addressing the decision, the HOD plastic surgery informed that the upcoming skin bank in KGMU will be a dedicated facility where skin from the donors, who wish to donate organs after death will be harvested and preserved. Later, this skin will be used for the treatment of patients with severe burn injuries through the method of grafting.
Reportedly, patients with severe burns catch infections very easily without proper treatment. This treatment includes skin grafting surgery which could only be possible through the means of a skin bank.
