In a first across the state, doctors of Lucknow's King George's Medical University (KGMU) have successfully assisted a 23-year-old pregnant woman to go through a natural birthing process. She had travelled to Lucknow from Farrukhabad, seeking the best possible medical care as her pregnancy was quite complicated.

Despite a testing birthing process, the doctors were successful in saving her life and the patient is currently in a stable condition. Further, this procedure is being hailed as a landmark achievement in the field of obstetrics critical care by experts at KGMU.

The patient, Nidhi, was in a critical condition when her delivery was performed while she was on dialysis. Complications during her pregnancy resulted in multiple organ failure, which she survived. She was discharged this week itself, post a month-long stay in the Intensive Care Unit where she was put on ventilator support owing to respiratory failure, shock with acute kidney injury and severe acid imbalance.

After the intrauterine death of the foetus, it was necessary to deliver it as soon as possible. However, due to severe acid imbalance in the body of the patient, a Caesarean delivery couldn't be performed. Hence, firstly her acid levels were stabilised by putting her on dialysis and then a normal delivery was performed by doctors at Queen Mary's Hospital, the gynaecology wing of KGMU.

This procedure is being tagged as a rare medical achievement by doctors at the hospital. In this regard, the KGMU spokesperson stated- "To the best of our knowledge, it is for the first time in the state that any patient has undergone normal delivery while still on dialysis."
