Alarming antibiotic misuse in Mumbai; Fortis Survey highlights lack of medical consultation

A recent survey by Fortis Hospitals has uncovered concerning patterns of antibiotic misuse in Mumbai, with many individuals bypassing medical consultations before purchasing them. The month-long study, which involved 4,511 participants, points to a rising public health threat—Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)—as a significant concern in the city. The findings revealed that 43% of respondents used over-the-counter antibiotics without first consulting a doctor.

Additionally, 53% of participants admit to sharing antibiotics with family and friends, while only 39% complete their prescribed courses. More worryingly, 71% cannot differentiate between bacterial and viral infections, leading to inappropriate antibiotic use.

The survey, which included participants aged 26-50 years, also revealed that 40% were unaware of the risks associated with incomplete antibiotic courses. As Mumbai grapples with this growing health concern, medical experts stress the urgent need for public awareness about judicious antibiotic use.
