As September rolls in, Mumbai eagerly anticipates the return of Mount Mary Fair, also known as the Bandra Fair. Celebrated at the historic Mount Mary Church, also known as the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount, this lively festival begins on September 8, 2024, and will run through September 15.

Celebrating the Nativity of Mother Mary, the fair draws in visitors from all faiths to enjoy its lively atmosphere and rich traditions.

Significance of Bandra's Mount Mary Fair

The origins of the fair are steeped in local legend. It is said that between 1700 and 1760, a Koli Christian fisherman discovered a statue of Mother Mary floating in the Arabian Sea after dreaming about it. The church, originally built by Portuguese priests in 1570 as a small chapel, evolved into the grand Basilica we see today after renovations in 1761.

The fair has become an integral part of Mumbai's cultural fabric, symbolising unity and celebration across communities. Whether you're here to pay your respects, enjoy delicious treats, or soak in the festive atmosphere, the Bandra Fair is a must-visit.

Feast Day Timings:

On September 8, morning masses will take place at 5:30 AM, 6:30 AM, 7:30 AM, 8:30 AM, 9:30 AM, and 10:30 AM. The main festival mass is scheduled for 11:30 AM, with the final mass at 12:30 PM.

Please note, there will be no evening mass.

As the city embraces this annual tradition, Bandra Fair continues to be a vibrant reminder of Mumbai's rich tapestry of faith, culture, and community.
